On the Consecration Ritual of the Cathedral of the Assumption (1479) and the Astral Symbolism of the Old Russian Church
In addition to the previously published analysis of the Old Russian tradition of walking around the church during the consecration of the Assumption Cathedral, the author examines the question of how the visible movement of the sun, as well as other luminaries and constellations around the fixed Earth, is realized. Attention has been emphasized on the astronomical fact that, rotating clockwise together with the zodiacal constellations, the luminaries, however, move in the plane of the ecliptic in the opposite direction, which makes their trajectories spiral. Hence comes the hypothesis that explains the meaning of walking from left to right and from right to left. The first case reproduces the general movement of protective celestial forces around the island of stability, while the second case represents only the movement that is peculiar to the seven divine luminaries residing on the firmament of heaven (correlated with the ecliptic) near the throne of God. It has been concluded that the ancient astronomical knowledge was the basis of different rules of walking around the church and inside its altar. In the Middle Ages, they were half-forgotten and rejected by the Christian Church, which explains the emerged irreconcilable differences.
