The Main Power Substation of the Volkhovskaya HPS as an Example of Neo-Romanticism in the Industrial Architecture of the 1920s

Neo-Romanticism in the pre-revolutionary industrial architecture was embodied in the buildings of the first Soviet power station — Volkhovskaya HPS. The main step-down substation on Polyustrovsky Prospect is a vivid example of neo-Romanticism. In this building, O. R. Munz, a well-known architect and theorist, who belonged to the older generation of Soviet architects, combined rationality and romanticism, reminiscent of the architecture of northern Italy. The location of the complex in a faceless urban environment resulted in the lack of popularity of this remarkable building.
