A Retrospective Version of Neoclassicism in Residential Houses in St. Petersburg in 1907–1909

A retrospective version of neoclassicism was consistently embodied in the construction of a few St. Petersburg mansions (architects E. S. Vorotilov and M. S. Lyalevich) in the late 1900s. The tenement buildings inevitably combined classicist forms with new structural schemes: a combination of order elements and bay windows became a characteristic feature. The influence of Art Nouveau mainly vanquished in this group of 1907–1909 apartment houses. Compositional and stylistic techniques, which developed at this stage in the buildings by L. L. Schroter, S. G. Ginger, M. M. Peretyatkovich and other architects laid the foundation for the further development of St. Petersburg neoclassicism in the 1910s.
