New materials regarding research in the fields of architecture and urban construction are being presented. The authors also focus on the history of the creation of little-known buildings of interest, on the development of local architectural traditions, on new attributions, and introduce recently discovered archive materials. A number of papers are dedicated to the issues of architectural and urban planning development of historical towns and cities or study the formation of architectural ensembles. The edition also includes papers that are devoted to theoretical historical-architectural problems, to biographies of architects, or analyze artistic approaches and concepts.

The Project for the Alexander II Sons’ Residences as a Turning Point in the Palace Construction in St. Petersburg

The paper describes the particular episode of the Ministry of the Imperial Court’s construction activity, related to preparing the palaces construction for the Alexander II’s children. The author studies how the construction sites were chosen, the architectural competition, which took into account all the projects, was prepared and conducted. In conclusion, the paper presents opinions of the two members of the competition committee that, according to the author, affected the Alexander II’s decision to introduce financial limit for the Grand Duke palaces construction.
