Architecture of the Vologda Region in 1730–1770s

The proposed study is the first to analyse the extensive heritage (more than 70 stone churches) of Vologda and surrounding villages. The dominant style in this region in the 1730–1760s was the Naryshkin style, and the Baroque in the 1770s. Masters from Kargopol, Ustyug, Moscow and from Ukraine sometimes worked in Vologda, however, in contrast to the previous period, the architectural tradition still shaped up — it is defined by a combination of conservative (one-storey five-domed churches, sometimes with two pillars and decorated in pre-Petrine style) and innovative (small octagon and half-domes) features. The distinctive forms are the windows in the cube arranged in two axes and Naryshkin style window architraves with multi-blade top edges.
