St. Nicholas Church in Lovzanga — a Wooden Architecture Landmark of the 19th Century Kargopol

The article is devoted to the church of St. Nicholas in Lovzanga pogost (the village of Zhukovskaya), built in 1881–1883 and consecrated in 1890. On the basis of written materials the paper reconstructs the history of Lovzanga pogost in the 17th–19th centuries, reveals the circumstances of the construction process and identifies the author of the project (O. A. Clausen) and the building-contractor (Stefan Ivanov Zakhar’in). The church of St. Nicholas is studied in a broader context of Kargopol wooden architecture, as well as in connection to the general trends of the era of eclecticism in Russian architecture of the second half of the 19th century. The article provides detailed measurements made during the expedition to the Kargopol district, Arkhangelsk region as a part of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research project in 2018.
