The Stages of the Architectural and Planning Development of the “Red Flag” Factory Complex (from A. Ackermann to E. Mendelsohn)

The history of building up the large industrial complex, located on the western outskirts of the Petrograd side, is divided into two periods: the pre-revolutionary one, associated with the Kersten family of entrepreneurs, and the Soviet one, when the factory was renamed into the Red Flag Factory. The style and the layout of these two construction phases differ, reflecting different approaches to organizing space. The first architectural complex, including blocks of buildings designed in the “brick style”, Neoclassicism, Art Nouveau and Protoconstructivism, had been formed by the beginning of the 20th century. The most of the buildings were designed by a civil engineer S. P. Kondratiev. Architects A. I. Ackermann and M. S. Lyalevich also took part in the construction of the factory buildings. Building the new complex in the neighboring area in 1926-1930s became an example of an innovative architectural planning solution. The work of E. Mendelsohn, which at first did not receive wide recognition, became one of the key points in the Leningrad avant-garde development.
