Gallery Houses in Zaryadye in the 19th — early 20th Century

The type of a cost-effective gallery house with entrances to residential rooms from the galleries located on one side of the building is fairly widespread in the architecture of the New Age. This type of houses has a rich history. In the 19th — early 20th century such houses were popular mostly in the Southern Europe, however a lot of residential buildings of this type appeared in Moscow. Most of them have already disappeared, only a few have survived till our days. Despite being called the same, the gallery houses in Moscow differed significantly from the Western European residential buildings in terms of their appearance and design, which had formed as a result of the building’s close association with trade. A lot of gallery houses were located in Zaryadye. The archival documents which the article is based on, allowed us to trace how this type of housing spread and then disappeared.
