Palladian Designs in the work of Yury Felten and His Workshop. On the Stylistic Pluralism in Architecture of the Catherine II Time

The article explores the coexistence of different styles in the architecture of the Catherine II time on the examples of the Palladian works by D. Quarenghi and by the architects who worked in the style of “Louis XVI”: Y. Felten and his associates. The given examples illustrate not only multiple intersections of different stylistic trends, but also an easy change of style depending on the particular task or on the samples indicated by the Empress, up to direct copying of the projects by trending European architects, even though their work was stylistically strange.

The given examples give new grounds for considering the significance of the English designs, above all the works of R. Adam, for Russian architecture. As pointed out in the article, the Empress-stimulated appeal to the English standards became relevant for Y. Felten and his associates, who worked in the French style.
