New materials regarding research in the fields of architecture and urban construction are being presented. The authors also focus on the history of the creation of little-known buildings of interest, on the development of local architectural traditions, on new attributions, and introduce recently discovered archive materials. A number of papers are dedicated to the issues of architectural and urban planning development of historical towns and cities or study the formation of architectural ensembles. The edition also includes papers that are devoted to theoretical historical-architectural problems, to biographies of architects, or analyze artistic approaches and concepts.

On the Symbolism of the Church Dome

The article substantiates the idea of the semantic and formal similarity between the church dome and the mandorla, which in the Christian art signifies the sacred circle around the image of God. Different types of mandorla are represented: from a narrow-width with pointed ends shape to a round, halo-like type. This variety makes it possible to find a fundamental similarity between the simple hemispherical domes and the complex forms, such as helmet-shaped or onion-shaped cupolas. The comparison between the dome and the tsar’s orb is essentially important. As well as the orb embodied the idealized model of the world, the dome could be a symbol of the coming stronghold of the true life, which would descend from heaven at the end of time.
