The Formation of the Retrospective Movement in the St. Petersburg Architecture (1902–1906)

The basis for the retrospective movement in St. Petersburg has been founded in the mid-1900s, after the first manifestation of neoclassical style. The articles by A. N. Benois (1902) and the 200th anniversary of St. Petersburg (1903) have also become additional impulses for the turn to the heritage. In those years, along with the domination of Art Nouveau, the stylistic range and the composition of St. Petersburg Retrospectivism have been determined, which included three main trends: Neo-Baroque, Neoclassicism and Neorenaissance. The early stage of this movement is represented by the works of L. N. Benois, A. I. Dietrich, A. V. Shusev, V. A. and G. A. Kosyakov, V. I. Shene and other architects.
