Two Periods of Church Construction in Nakhichevan-on-Don. The Historical and Cultural Background of Stylistic Preferences

The article reveals the stylistic features and characteristics of the creative method of the architects who have created Nakhichevan-on-Don churches. Two periods of church construction are distinguished, works from each of them are analyzed on the background of the simultaneous development of Russian architecture of the classical era on the one hand and the era of historicism and the search for national style on the other. It has been found out that two archival photographs of the Nakhichevan church of St. Nicholas (Surb Nikogos) hold the record of the architect’s change in the project and two major church renovations. For the first time church architecture of Armenians from the Don region is analyzed in the context of the development of Russian architecture and the historical and cultural situation from the late 18th to the beginning of the 20th century as well as ideological changes in the Russian Armenians communities.
