The Town Construction Development of the Vodskaya Piatina in the 15th-17th centuries and of Ingria in the 17th Century prior to the Foundation of St. Petersburg

Studying written and cartographic sources from various Swedish and St. Petersburg collections, we may form an idea of the spatial settling of the lands around the Neva, the Ladoga and the Gulf of Finland, prior to the foundation of St. Petersburg, that had taken place in the Novgorod-Moscow (before 1580) and Swedish (1580 – 1702-1710) periods. The author takes a close look at the principles of administrative territorial division, the formation of the road and waterway networks, at the system of settling the Neva region (scheme of towns, fortresses, trade and craft settlements, estates of the nobility, church architecture, etc.). The materials studied here are viewed in the light of the contemporary topography of the area of Greater St. Petersburg and its environs. Further attention is given to the numerous extant fragments of the general framework and centers of population. This type of work is conducted for the first time.
