A. A. Morozov’s City Residence in Vozdvizhenka: Sources of Architectural Form

The author studies the origin of forms in the style of A.A. Morozov’s city residence in Vozdvizhenka Street. She points out the sources that inspired the client and the author of the construction – architect V.A. Mazyrin, and served as a model for certain elements of the interior and exterior décor of the building. This influence should be connected with the visit of both Muscovites to Spain and Portugal, so their hypothetical itinerary is also traced in the paper. There are interesting parallels in terms of imagery and composition between A.A. Morozov’s mansion and the works of Luigi Mainini, an outstanding Portuguese architect of Italian origin, in particular, the estate Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra. The author comes to the conclusion that V.A. Mazyrin’s project is not just an imitation, but an independent and original version of the Portuguese style “Neomanuelino”, created by the powerful artistic talent of the Moscow architect.
