History of S. S. Apraksin’s House in Znamenka: City Residence or Public Theatre?

The work is dedicated to a house in Znamenka Street, Moscow, which belonged to S.S. Apraksin, a rich nobleman in the reign of Catherine the Great. A singular feature of this building is the fact that it united under the same roof a private residence and a very large theatre, which for several decades functioned as a public place. Looking into archive documents the author learned some new details regarding the purchase of land, the construction of the mansion and the reasons for selling it to the state. Special attention is given to the living conditions of the owner and his family, as well as to his individual character, his predilections and likings, largely determining the appearance of this unique edifice. The paper also describes Apraksin’s theatre, its history being closely linked with the history of the house and with the life of its owner. The author uses a concrete example to illustrate the client-architect relations in the late 18th century.
