The Problem of Models in Russian Architecture of the Late 19th — Early 20th Century

The paper deals with the issue of models in the Russian Eclectic, Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism architecture. The author looks at different ways of using models in the construction of residential and office buildings, dating to the turn of the 19th century and the wide range of ways they were interpreted. Many of the models that were embodied are connected with the personal impressions of those who commissioned the work and the architects themselves, collected during their journeys around Western Europe, which expands our knowledge regarding the preferences and aesthetic tastes of the time. The author outlines the general typology of models — the projects that influenced the new edifices, the original elements and details that had been picked out, and the stylistic inspirations. The paper allows us to have a new look at the theme in question, and to focus on the broad cultural context of Russian architecture, developing in the late 19th — early 20th century.
