Onion-Shaped One-Domed Tops as One of the Typical Features of the Wooden Churches of the Vaga and North Dvina River Regions

The paper studies one of the regional church-building traditions of the Russian north. The author looks at a number of little-known wooden edifices of the 18th–19th centuries, which are crowned with a certain type of structure, found in the River Vaga basin and in the territories around middle North Dvina. The work analyzes the area where this particular feature has been spreading, and, based on this research, tries to define the stages of their development and the various influences. The formation of local architectural traditions is set within the context of the general evolution of wooden construction of the Russian North in the 17th–18th centuries.
