Historical and Architectural Study of the Chapels of the Verkhovazhski District of the Vologda Region

The paper is dedicated to various wooden chapels, which have come down to us in the central area of the Verkhovazhski District of the Vologda Region. In the course of special expeditions, conducted on the initiative of the public organization “Obshcheye Delo (Common cause); Reviving the Wooden Churches of the North” and supported by NIITIAG RAASN, there were discovered and studied 14 chapels, part of which had been totally unknown to scholars. The constructions in question were raised not earlier than the first half of the 19th century, were later rebuilt, and the majority of them have a roof made of planks. Some can be dated accurately and belong to the late 19th – early 20th century. The main volume of most of these buildings is a cubic log-house, covered with a hipped roof over which we can see a small octagonal top, usually with a light. Some of them have porches, others – a sort of narthex, occasionally crowned with a bell-tower, over which often rises a cupola with a spire. The interior of these buildings is usually covered with an eight-part or a four-part vault with a drum aperture. As the extant buildings were studied, there was also a restoration project taking place, involving reconstruction of a chapel in the Village Markovskaya (Kapustino) of the Verkhovazhski District, which is currently being carried out.
