Methodology of Accelerated Town Construction Planning of E. May

The paper studies the method of accelerated town construction planning, which was expected to be used by design organization of the VSNKh, responsible for creating the general plans of the newly-erected Socialist Cities (Sotsgorod). This method was invented by Ernst May, a German architect, who was invited to the USSR at the beginning of the First Five-Year Plan. The author describes the principle of working out the basic planning unit of this method – a standard line building quarter, and offers some details regarding the positioning of urban districts and city structures in general. The reader can also learn about the planning schemes of various quarters, which appeared within the framework of this method. Examples are given of how Soviet design organizations, particularly those included into the GUKKh NKVD system, borrowed and used the method of accelerated town construction planning.
