The Influence of Technological Progress on Russian Religious Architecture in the Second Half of the 19th — early 20th Century

The author analyzes the projects of V. A. Kosiakov, taking them as an example, which, for the first time in the history of Russian architectural studies, are regarded within the context of two innovations, connected with technological progress, and influencing the construction of churches in Russia (second half of the 19th — early 20th century). The first of them — development of steam and water-steam heating — led to the disappearance of refectories, specifically serving as a winter church. This led to the gradual disappearance of the layout of the “nave” type, which had been popular from the 17th to the first half of the 19th centuries, resulting in major changes in the typology of ecclesiastical architecture. The second feature, connected with technological achievements in church construction, was related to the widespread appearance of arched reinforced concrete structures, encouraging the drastic rise in the creation of churches without pillars, in particular, buildings with vaults based on intersecting arches. For the first time since the reign of Peter the Great we can also witness a return to churches built in accordance with the basilica scheme.
