Automobile Garage as a New Type of Construction in Russia in the Late 19th — early 20th Century (second half of the 1890s — 1917)

The paper is devoted to a sphere in local architecture which has been previously largely ignored by specialists — the formation of garage construction in the last decades of the existence of the Russian Empire. Contrary to widespread opinion, the development of the automobile industry strongly influenced the culture of prerevolutionary Russia. In particular, it generated an absolutely new form of construction, specifically created for keeping and maintaining new motorized vehicles. The author, looking at examples in St. Petersburg, Moscow and a few other cities follows the development from the prerevolutionary automobile garage, close to the traditional carriage house, to multispace parking lots with their complex spatial and planning structure, as well as technical equipment, which allowed to use the space as rationally as possible.
