Regarding the History of Creation of Architect D. I. Grimm’s Project of the Grand Dukes’ Burial Vault in Petropavlovskaya Fortress

The paper looks at the origins of the ideas embodied in the project of the Burial Vault of the Grand Dukes in Petropavlovskaya Fortress, designed by D. I. Grimm, and its connection with the gavit, erected in Armenia in the 12th century, of the Surb Nshan Church in the Akhpat Monastery. The author establishes a connection between both constructions by conducting a comparative analysis of two previously unknown earlier variants of the project, kept in the Scientific-Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts, and of the plans of the gavit, which D. I. Grimm published in his collection of engravings “Monuments of Christian Architecture in Georgia and Armenia” (St. Petersburg, 1866). Unlike the widespread “historical” approach in architecture, when in creating modern buildings only external decorative forms and stylistic features were used, in the case of the Grand Dukes’ Burial Vault, the author takes as a basis of the project the constructive scheme of crisscross pair arches, which he discovered as he was studying the Armenian construction.
