Russian Orthodox Construction in the Kazan Government in the Mid–19th Century

This work studies the history of the construction of Russian Orthodox Churches in the Kazan Government at the middle of the 19th century, when, after a long period of sustaining a policy based on universal Christian values, there was restored a traditional model, that the Russian Empire, in terms of the relations between the state and the church, had previously. The problem of unifying the populace, that adhered to various confessions, on the basis of Russian Orthodox values became particularly important. The authorities, with regard to non-Russian ethnic groups, approved of a rigorous approach in the methods of missionary work, which was actively supported by different governmental structures. The special role of Russian Orthodox Christianity in the ideology of the state determined the strict control of ecclesiastical architecture across the empire, which is illustrated by the cases involving the reconstruction of the Kazan Annunciation Cathedral; the towns and estates of the nobility with Russian Orthodox population; and, finally, the settlements of the converts to Christianity, created by the government.
