Architect Alexander Bryullov at the Court of Nicholas I. The Creative Individuality of the Master and the Emperor’s Will

The building of the headquarters of the Guards’ Corps marks an important stage in the creative evolution of A. P. Bryullov. The guards’ headquarters was expected to conclude the Palace Square ensemble, which was otherwise formed by such masterpieces as the Admiralty, the Winter Palace, the building of the General Staff and the ministries, as well as by the Alexandrovski Column. Bryullov’s edifice, being large in size, tactfully finishes the whole ensemble, remaining in harmony with these constructions. Considering the terminology of the time we may say that this building was executed in the “Neo-Greek” style. In this case we can see a resemblance with certain details and elements of the Erechtheion Temple in Athens. The free approach, involving the usage of various classical architectural forms, carried out by the master, should not, however, conceal from us certain features of his creative method, which is quite distant from that of Classicism. The paper is dedicated to the analysis of these features, as well as to describing the course of development of the work, attempting, at the same time, to define the role of Emperor Nicholas I, who commissioned the project, in the whole process.
