Russian Period in the Architectural Career of Gaetano Chiaveri and the Roman Architectural School

The paper studies the work of Gaetano Chiavery in Russia. It focuses on two projects which are believed to belong to this stage of his artistic career. A closer analysis of them demonstrates that they could not have been created to be realized in Russia. The drafts were executed by Chiavery after he completed his service in the country, and were intended to demonstrate the architect’s artistic skill among European professionals and potential clients. The author takes a close look at the genesis and evolution of an interesting planning scheme, which Chiavery used in the layout of the St. Trinity Church in Korostino, one of the mentioned “Pseudo-Russian” projects.
