Construction History of the Church Complex of the Pomorye Village Purnema in the 16th–19th Centuries

This work is devoted to the construction history of the church complex of the Pomorye village Purnema in the 16th–19th centuries. The studied archive materials allowed the authors to define more accurately some facts regarding the building of the Church of the Nativity of Christ (1857–1861), the bell-tower (1775) and the chapel (1912). However, special attention is given to the correct dating of the St. Nicholas’ Church. Some measurements, conducted in 2012 by an expedition from the St. Petersburg University, helped determine four principal stages concerning the building of the edifice: 1640s, 1760s, mid–19th century and 1875. The paper also discusses some general issues regarding research on Russian wooden architecture, connected with source study, continuity of technical approaches, the phenomenon of archaisms and the particular lines along which parish construction was forming in the epoch of Tsar Nicholas.

The work is accompanied by measurement drafts of the St. Nicholas’ Church in Purnema, representing its plan, sectional arrangement and façade during each of the four construction stages.
