The Annunciation Cathedral of the Nikolo-Koriazhemski Monastery — a Lost 17th-Century Architectural Monument

The paper analyzes a specific example of the architecture of Northern Russia, dating to the second half of the 17th century, which reflected in a singular way the impressive and inert forms of some large churches created at the time. The author writes about the possible Ustiug influence regarding the majority of forms of the Nikolo-Koriazhemski Monastery Cathedral. He takes a closer look at the issue of constructing memorial buildings for Russian ecclesiastical dignitaries in the second half of the 17th century, and at the special features of these commissions, marking the most important stages in the life of these hierarchs. In some cases the erected church, most often in a religious house, could be perceived as a future burial place of the patron.
