Composition and Decoration of the Bell Tower in Kolomenskoye (St. George’s Church)

The article deals with the bell tower of the Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye, also called the Church of St. George (presumably built in 1530s, architect Petrok Maly) and it’s connection with Italian architecture of the second half of the 15th — first third of the 16th century. Examples of the use of the «Giant Order» («Ordine gigante») are shown. These include rotunda buildings with arches and semicircular tympanums. A unique and somewhat archaic scheme of archivolt arch support on cantilever capitals is present in this case. The author suggests that Petrok Maly was well acquainted with the contemporary architectural monuments of the Italian Renaissance. At the same time, a certain lack of confidence and unprofessionalism of the master may be noted in this case.
