The Rise of Russian Architecture in the Late Middle Age

The paper is focused on the causes and effects of that spiritual acme, which took place in early Russian culture at the time of the formation and strengthening of the Moscow autocratic state. The author holds the opinion that, owing to this rise, all the elements that were adopted from abroad served its own, original art, expressing the idea that the Russian people and Holy Russia itself were chosen by God. Some doubt is expressed regarding the justification of such a rapid and proud ascent of Moscow, strongly highlighted in connection with the reforms of the church. The split, made worse by the emergence of absolutism, lead to the appearance of two different cultures in a single country. Traditional culture, including architecture, continued to exist and preserved its ability to create highly original works within the predominantly Christian environment connected with the Old Believers. The official imperial culture of the upper classes, distancing itself from it and turning towards the West, with all its splendor, nevertheless, lost its profound creative force.
